WELLNESS ONCOLOGY & HEMATOLOGY
Anemia, or the lack of red blood cells or its principal component, hemoglobin, is one of the most common conditions observed. Anemia itself is not a diagnosis but a sign of an underlying problem that needs to be more closely identified. There are many causes of anemia, including iron deficiency anemia, B12 and folic acid deficiency, as well hemolysis, or red blood cell destruction, and genetic causes such as sickle cell anemia and thalessemia. When the body fails to produce enough normal, healthy hemoglobin, if too many of these vital blood cells are destroyed, or if too much blood is lost, a diagnosis of anemia is often made. People will often complain of fatigue, lightheadedness, and decreased exercise tolerance. Sometimes anemia is found incidentally on a blood test with no associated symptoms.
Dr. Shaye, Dr. Lashkari, and Dr. Ho believe in treating the patient, not the disease, so if a diagnosis of anemia is made, you will receive expert care designed specifically for the type of anemia affecting you. The goal of the hematologists at Wellness Oncology & Hematology is to provide personalized treatment that not only cures your symptoms but also improves your overall quality of life. Treatments for anemia may include medications, vitamin and mineral supplements, iron infusions, and/or possibly blood transfusions.
